The Hillhouse site manufactures fluoropolymers — principally PTFE and ETFE — and discharges process wastewater to the River Wyre. The Environment Agency is currently conducting an investigation into PFAS contamination on land in the area following the identification of elevated PFOA concentrations in soil near the site. The investigation, which began with Phase 1 soil sampling in 2023, has progressed through multiple phases and remains active.
